Holiday Card Free Download

Hi there - this was a hard year, and I’ve been finding the holidays a little harder this year away from home. I’ve been remembering that the times I’ve felt best were when I tried to do something in the spirit of giving. In that spirit, I converted the design for my personal holiday card into an English and German design in both Letter and A4 sizes).

They’re in my shop (you do not need to give me any of your personal info for free download purchases)
English
German

I'm moving to Berlin!

Hello, it’s been a minute (or like 2 years) -
I’ve got some big news: I’m moving to Berlin, Germany to join my partner after a year and a half of doing long distance.

Last month, I ran an indiegogo campaign to raise funds for the costs of moving my studio/business and for my visa application. Thanks to 246 people, it was a great success!

indiegogo

What does this mean for my shop?
It means that I’ll be closing it from March 18, 2020 until I’m able to get my freelancer visa in Germany, along with a tax number, etc, etc. Ideally, that will happen in June or July, but as of now, I do not have an appointment scheduled (they’ve been booked up for a while).
Once I’m settled in and have international shipping figured out, I’ll begin operating internationally again.

I’ve committed to updating indiegogo followers on my progress, but I’ll share some of it here too. The process of moving internationally is complicated, and I think it’ll be nice to document it, in case it helps another American artist planning to move abroad.
Bis später, y’all,
Grace

I have big feelings about Master of None & also representation in media

If you’ve been following my IG stories the past month, you probably know I’ve been marathoning Master of None (I will stop posting about it, promise). What is most satisfying about it is the depth that diverse characters are allowed to have. It is an antidote to all the years of internalizing media messages that essentially amount to “you will never be anything but a token character, a sidekick. And sidekicks don’t have their own stories.” Reminded me of something Junot Diaz said:

"You guys know about vampires? … You know, vampires have no reflections in a mirror? There’s this idea that monsters don’t have reflections in a mirror. And what I’ve always thought isn’t that monsters don’t have reflections in a mirror. It’s that if you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves. And growing up, I felt like a monster in some ways. I didn’t see myself reflected at all. I was like, “Yo, is something wrong with me? That the whole society seems to think that people like me don’t exist?" And part of what inspired me, was this deep desire that before I died, I would make a couple of mirrors. That I would make some mirrors so that kids like me might see themselves reflected back and might not feel so monstrous for it.”

I am grateful to all the mirror-makers. The ones that confirm that you exist and that it matters that you do. All bodies are good bodies, and we should treat all of them so.

I wrote an article on art + politics for Design*Sponge!

This past month I had the privilege of writing an article for Design*Sponge (which you can read here). It addresses a topic I don't think is easily unraveled in a short essay, but I think this is a good place for artists to start if they feel apprehensive.
It was also the impetus for me updating my website, because it was sorely in need of some TLC. I have a renewed resolve to keep this section up-to-date, and to make a real effort to write more things on my website as well.
